A Lady Unattached OR Miss Morewit Writes on Her Faults, a Day at Market, and a Fine Evening

It is, my Friends, the beginning of a New Week and as such and in keeping with my Promise, I am writing once more. On Saturday, as I had before mentioned, I woke Early to prepare for going to Market. I was Tired for, I am ashamed to Admit, I am not used to getting up with the little birds and the sun. It is surely a Failing of mine which I do know I should correct. I fear sometimes that I have too many of such Failings, for oft times I am short with my family and prone to be Lazy in my Writing, and I am also less Active than a Young Woman should be if She wishes to maintain Her physique! Perhaps these faults contribute to my still being a Woman Unattached… this is a fact that does Weigh Heavy on my mind at times but, while it irks me, Mother has much Faith and tells me I am not yet Bound for the life of an Old Maid (though I have my doubts, I feel sure I am a Spinster already when I see so many of my younger companions having adventures in Romance and Courting). Enough of this though! Such a subject does not bear dwelling upon.

After our morning coffee, which was a rushed affair, I gathered the Berries and some small amounts of Eggs and Honey, and departed with Haste as I was nearly late already. I was quite Put Out on arriving to find that the Best Table had been left at home, but was relieved by the later arrival of Mother and Father who brought both Flowers and Table and more honey as well. There was less than usual at my booth due to the Most Terrible Drought that has been afflicting us all. Despite this I did well enough, except in some Small Toy Trifles that I had Sewn myself of stray socks. Mother thought them Charming enough to take along, but I fear they were not colorful enough to Attract any of the Ladies shopping. I was however Most Pleased to see a number of Acquaintances, included my Dearest Friend Miss Lizzy Woodwise and her Sister Miss Indianna. Miss Woodwise has been inclined to accompany myself at the market selling her own Handiworks, at which she is quite Able. I must profess myself to be quite struck with Admiration at her Accomplishments as a fellow Young Lady, for she has learned many Useful crafts. Also shopping was the Merritop family, of which Master Merritop is a Particular Friend of Lizzy and I— being something of a Little Brother and friends with Master Fox, he is a Droll spirit indeed.  Master Merritop’s uncle was also present, a Young Man of my age whom I am not yet quite so well Acquainted with, for while a Gentleman of Good Family he is quiet and I suspect him of being Shy.

Later in the evening, I had occasion to see both of these Good Families again for Father and I went visiting to a Birthday Gathering for a friend in the Theatre. We gave our regards and the Miss Woodwises and I enjoyed Wading and Boating in the Lake that adjoined the quaint wooded park behind the house. I was Pleased to have a boating race against Master Merritop, for though I did Cheat and turn my boat a little sooner than he, the Poor Fellow gave up on the way back and I Won  quite squarely. After boating, most of the evening was spent in Playful Merriment at the Unfortunate Accident of Mr. Lion, who had the Misfortune of locking in the Keys of his Motor Carriage. While the Adults tried in vain to free the Refreshments that he had brought, Us younger folks offer help when we could and played Games of Theatre when we were of no use.

I find I have so very much that I could write and would do so except the Hour is Late and I am needed to Assist with dinner preparations and Other Chores for my Eldest Brother is returning this coming weekend with the girl that he is Courting and we must Make Ready.

Your Humble Servant,

~A Lady of Morewit
